En el marco del curso CELFI-Unubiolac Bacteriófagos: del genoma al metagenoma, el
miércoles 11/10 a las 12.30 hs en el aula Cardini el Dr. Peter Finerán
dará un seminario especial titulado: 

"The regulation and defence activities of Class 1 CRISPR-Cas systems"

Bacteria have evolved ‘immune systems’ as a result of their constant
exposure to foreign mobile genetic elements, including bacteriophages and
plasmids. For example, an estimated 1025 bacteriophage infections occur
every second, which affects global nutrient cycles. Other mobile genetic
elements harbour antibiotic resistance or pathogenicity determinants,
which influence bacterial evolution and our ability to treat infectious
disease. To thwart these invaders, bacteria have many resistance
strategies, including adaptive immunity provided by the CRISPR-Cas
systems. In this talk I will present our recent research into how these
systems acquire spacers from their invaders and will explain how bacteria
use communication to regulate their CRISPR-Cas adaptive immune systems.

El Dr. Fineran es Profesor Asociado en Department of Microbiology and
Immunology, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand y ha sido orador
invitado en los congresos más importantes sobre CRISPR-Cas. No se pierdan
